I love color, all colors, a variety of colors, and the more vibrant the better, but I like the feel of a black-and-white image every now and then. Perhaps it’s my mood of the day or the mood of a particular image that finds me embracing the abundance of gray tones.
Considering I’m such a fan of color, I always take photographs with color in mind. Thus, the images in today’s post were shot in color then converted into Black & White and further edited in Lightroom.
Lens-Artist #265 Black & White or Monochrome
This week, Anne over at Slow Shutter Speed invites us to share our images of B & W or Monochrome photographs. Be sure and check out her post for an informative explanation of the differences and similarities between the two.
Till next time …
Awesome photos Ingrid. I too am a huge fan of monochromatic colors such as black and white because they are versatile and always look good🔥🔥💯

Ingrid,
You’re a talented artist with a great feel for composition. I love the misty trees image! Keep up the good work and stay cool out there! Joe

Awe, Joe you are too kind. As for the weather, this extreme heat is getting old. ☹

We really like your monochrome pictures. We love BW, it’s more artistic. it’s more modern art because of the abstraction.

These are wonderful examples Ingrid. I think most of us shoot color and convert. Like you I prefer color, and some images work both ways. Clearly, you have a good eye for what works. You may prefer color but your B&Ws are beautifully done. I especially loved the dock and the sailboats reflecting in the water.

Thank you Tina. I did convert a few other images, but they didn’t seem to work for me as well as the color version. I would agree, that most of us shoot in color then convert. After all, if we shot in BW we wouldn’t be able to convert to color. Thus, we can enjoy the best of both.😊

Love me a good black & white photo although I also love sepia!

I still prefer color but it’s fun to play around with B&W.

Great post, Ingrid. I love your opener but my favourite has to be the misty trees, there’s a lot there to admire.

Thank you. I too enjoy the image with the trees in the mist. Although it was taken in color, there really wasn’t much color to be seen making it a perfect monochrome image.

Great photos. If it’s San Diego that must be the Star of India? LOVE the perspective on that pier boardwalk. Excellent.

Thank you! That San Diego image was taken several years ago and I don’t even remember where along the coast I was standing. I’d love to return.

Lovely images, Ingrid. I find that monochrome often brings out more detail than color. It’s always so interesting to compare!

I totally agree about different details showing up. Digital photography sure makes it fun to change an image up and compare.

Love your black and whites! Our home interior is mostly gray, white and black…with the exception of my “Mermaid ” downstairs bathroom. That room smacks of ocean blues, greens and corals…plus a few pics…and mermaid scale curtains…Yep, I have officially lost my marbles….Hoping this finds you and yours all healthy and happy…Grandchildren are the continuance…Hugs!

Thank you Donna. Scouring images on my external harddrive took me down memory lane and reminded me of all our RV travels. I know you can relate. Although I miss our travels, I love watching my one-year-old granddaughter every Monday. 😊

There is something calming about black and white photos, even in storm clouds…Hope this finds you and yours healthy and doing well!!!!

Thanks Nancy. That image was a quick snap with a little Point and Shoot camera. I’d love to get back over to San Diego with my new camera.

Your images are a beautiful response to my challenge Ingrid. I love the pier shot with its reflection and the sails on the ship. Wonderful B&Ws.

Thank you Anne. It was a fun challenge to engage in. It was interesting to see how the feel of a photo changes with editing from color to monochrome.

Oh wow beautiful shots Ingrid. I like the 3rd picture a lot – so mysterious with the fog around the trees. 🙂

Thank you. I remember taking that image with the trees. It was a quiet yet eerie morning and although the photo was taken in color, there isn’t much difference between the B&W and color images.

Oh I would love to see that original pic but yes I imagine it would look monochrome as well.

I especially like the last two, Ingrid, but I agree with Donna that monochrome highlights the lines of the ship so well.

It’s always interesting to compare the color image with the B&W version. The image can take on a totally different feel and look. This was a fun challenge.

Thank you, John. Obviously I had to dig through my archives since it’s still too hot to run around outside.

It’s still too hot for me to ride my bike, but I see others riding in 100-degree weather. It was cooler today.

We too have had a bit of a break from the excessive heat, but like you, it’s still too hot for me to go for a walk. 🥵

The low 100s are back very soon, Ingrid, but I squeezed a long bike ride in today since it was only in the 80s. Summer keeps going! 🌴

Some photos just call for it! The detail in the San Diego ship is a great example. No doubt it was beautiful in color and yet, do the water and/or sky, take it away from the detail we see here.

Interesting perspective Donna. I didn’t think I’d like that sailboat image without color, but it does seem to work. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
