Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May each year. While many people associate this holiday with barbecues, parades, an extended weekend, and the unofficial start of summer, its significance goes deeper.
It’s a day when folks in the U.S. pause to remember the sacrifices made by those who have served in our military and laid down their lives in defense of freedom… the ultimate sacrifice.
It’s also the perfect time to remember other losses. That could mean the loss of a loved one, loss of a friendship, loss of a pet, or any other kind of loss. Life can be complex.
We all exist on borrowed time and a sudden void should serve as a reminder to cherish every moment, to hold hands tightly, and to whisper words left unsaid.
Life goes on. Let’s embrace happy memories; the warmth of a loved one’s hand, the taste of morning coffee, the sun’s kiss on our skin, the ocean’s breeze on our face, and the awakening of a garden filled with flowers.

Let’s enjoy more barbecues and laughter this summer and not wait for a holiday.
As aromas drift from the grill, let us raise our plastic cups filled with lemonade (or maybe something stronger) and toast to life’s simple pleasures.
Let us celebrate the people and friendships that once were, and embrace joy in the memories. And remember, every day is a gift. So, get out there and LIVE life.

Well said, my friend, well said. And the photos are stunning. Currently, I am blown away by the red poppies across the fields as we travel north, and also prepare for the 80th anniversary of D-day. I wish we were going to be in Normandy next week. We will just miss it….. A beautiful post, Ingrid.

Ingrid, thank you for mentioning the true meaning of this holiday. My husband is a Vietnam Vet and I spent more than a year hoping he would return. Fortunately he did, but so many didn’t. And I like that you got your point across with beautiful floral images.

My husband served during that time as well and our son is currently serving in the Reserves. I did not know my husband during his military days and can’t image the emotional toll loved ones endured. 🙏

Thank you, Beth. I think when we get to a certain age, we start to face our mortality. We have a neighbor as well as a dear friend battling cancer, and the thought of really living and enjoying life seems to be at the forefront of my mind more often. 🌸 I’m so blessed to have had those years of RVing and travel while healthy and energetic.
