Oh darn! I seriously thought finding the images for today’s post would be easy. I scoured through photographs downloaded on my laptop. I racked my brain for possible photos in one of my external hard drives. I seriously have thousands of pictures, but do the images depict the color purple?

For this week’s Sunday Stills photo challenge, we’re asked to share images of various shades of purple.
Wildflowers galore!
We enjoyed a glorious spring here in Phoenix, Arizona. We had above average precipitation and near perfect temperatures. The desert heat is upon us now, but I can still revel in the beautiful wildflower season we had. I tried getting out and about with the camera as much as possible.
Did I capture purple wildflowers or do they appear more blue?

My neighbor has the most beautiful tree adorned with an abundance of purple blooms. I’m not sure what kind of tree it is though. I really should download one of those apps on my iPhone that identifies a plant or flower.

As I sit in my comfy chair writing this post and occasionally glancing out the window to admire this beautiful tree, I struggle to think of other purple objects. Well, that is until my attention is drawn to the kitchen. The sweet aroma of baked goods still wafts in the air from the freshly baked coffee cake removed from the oven just a short time ago.
Blueberries or Purple-berries?
In my opinion, no Sunday brunch is complete without a tasty coffee cake. And I make one heck of a yummy Blueberry Coffee Cake, or so I’ve been told.
Blueberries definitely look blue when whole, but once we cut into them the color appears more purple. Am I right? Plus, after working with blueberries, my hands are definitely stained purple. Thus, let’s call them blueberries when they are whole and purple-berries once we start working with them … that is cutting them or pureeing them. #purple 😁

My hands can attest to the purple hue every time I make this coffee cake. I usually use frozen blueberries and after dipping my hands into the bag to retrieve the blueberries to add to the batter, I have to wash my hands immediately or else risk spreading the purple hue onto other surfaces.

Mother’s Day Brunch
Today is Mother’s Day and my favorite meal to celebrate the day is breakfast. My daughter is making brunch for me today and we’ll toast with mimosa’s. Nothing like a little mother-daughter time to bring a smile to my face. Of course, we’ll indulge in a slice (or two) of this delicious blueberry coffee cake.
And it would be just plain rude of me if I didn’t share the recipe for this scrumptious coffee cake, especially after showing you the pictures. Be sure and let me know if you give this recipe a try.
Blueberry Crumb Coffee Cake
Dry Ingredients for cake
2 cups all-purpose
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients for cake
1 large egg
3/4 cup milk (or water)
1/4 cup melted butter
1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (if using frozen, do not thaw, use frozen)
CRUMB TOPPING
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, slightly softened and cubed
Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. For the cake: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. In a large measuring cup, whisk together egg and milk then add to dry ingredients. With a spatula or wooden spoon start mixing then add the melted butter. Once all ingredients are incorporated, fold in the blueberries.
Transfer to a greased baking pan (9×9 square non-stick or 10″ cast-iron skillet). Set aside.
For the topping: In a small bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in butter with a fork forming small pea-size crumbles. When all the butter is combined forming a crumbly mixture, top the cake evenly with the crumble, then place the cake into a preheated 375-degree oven for 30-35 minutes. (Do not overbake). Serve warm or at room temperature.

Hi Clay. My sister-in-law and husband sold their Hayward WI lakefront property and moved here to Sun City this past March. Thus, we’re staying in the desert heat most of the summer with a weekend trip here or there to the mountains. Keep me posted on your Phx visit. Maybe we can connect in person.

They all look purple to me! Now that I live in the land of purple (lavender), and though I love the color, I’ve vowed to plant none of my own. A few true-blues might find their way in, though 🙂

One of these days, I would love to make it up to the lavender and tulip fields in your neck of the woods. Any flower, regardless of color, gets a thumbs up from me. 👍🌹🌻🌺

Thank you Beth. Seems the general consensus is blueberries can also fall into the purple category. Thus, I stayed within the prompt 🤪

To me all your lovely flowers are definitely purple – I don’t see blue at all! As for the cake, it looks and sounds delicious, but I’m curious about the name. You called it a coffee cake but it doesn’t seem to have coffee in it, judging by the recipe. Do you call all cakes you might eat with a cup of coffee a coffee cake? If so, surely that could apply to ANY cake?!

We American’s can be a strange bunch LOL However, I believe the concept is German. Coffee cake is typically a single layer, flavored with either fruit or cinnamon, and leavened with baking soda or baking powder, and topped with a streusel, powdered sugar, or drizzle of frosting and eaten along side a cup of coffee. Hope that makes sense. 😋

As a connoisseur of all things purple, I say all of those flowers in your beautiful photos are purple, LOL! As you said, blueberries are most definitely blue, until they stain your hands and dishtowels. Your coffeecake looks delicious. That’s great advice to not thaw the berries, because I’ve made that mistake and the coffeecake turns gray. Not pretty at all!
It sounds like you had a lovely Mother’s Day…how sweet to celebrate with your daughter!

I know how much you love purple so thanks for saying all my floral images are purple. I too have made the mistake of defrosting frozen berries… not an appetizing look.
I did indeed enjoy a lovely time with my daughter. Hope you had a lovely day as well.

Welcome to my world! As a colorblind person, I ask myself questions like this on a regular basis. Is it purple or is it blue? Blue or gray? Black or navy? Pink or white? Green or brown? Brown or gold? All I can tell you is that your photos are lovely, and I’m really appreciating the character and color of that Jacaranda tree! Coincidently, we enjoyed a blueberry coffee cake at our Mother’s Day brunch, too! It was gifted to us by my fellow mother-in-law (our daughter-in-law’s mother) who couldn’t bear to come empty handed. And I’m pretty sure the berries did look purple!

That’s so rare for a female to be colorblind. It’s we that pass it down to our sons. My son suffers from the same shade questions. He can see the differences and he does see a lot of color but he can’t tell the difference between purple or blue, or green and brown along with varies shades of other colors.
Hope you enjoyed your coffee cake as much as we enjoyed ours!

Hi, Ingrid,
I can attest to blueberries turning purple. My dog’s favorite treat is blueberries, and after he gobbles a handful, his tongue turns bright purple. Stay cool in that desert heat, and have a lovely Mother’s Day, Mimi!

I see purple, Ingrid! Blue is a big factor in the color. Funny how blueberries are more purple than blue, but your coffee cake looks delish (thanks for sharing that recipe). How nice to have a jacaranda tree within view! I thought Arizona would be too dry for them but they sure seem to love San Diego. I think purple reigns in the floral kingdom! Have a great week!

The only reason I finally figured out it was a jacaranda tree was thanks to your post 😁 Yes, the lines between blues and purples seem to be blurred. It was fun putting this post together. Thanks for the prompt.

Thank you Pam. I initially thought the tree was a wisteria tree but it didn’t quite fit the description. Jacaranda it is, now I know!

Definitely purple. I used fresh blueberries to make an ice cream topping yesterday and can attest to the fact that the cooked version is indeed purple. One drip from the spatula onto my white dishtowel was proof plenty. Lots of beautiful purples in this post and I do believe that is a Jacaranda tree. Just saw one yesterday.
