About Us

My husband and I have definitely lived an interesting life, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Ok, that’s a lie. I’d changed a bunch of things that my older and wiser self now knows, but since going back and doing a repeat isn’t an option, I’m still pretty content with my personal journey.

In June of 2013, on a whim, we moved into our RV full-time. We were empty nesters, feeling restless, and itching to travel. Whims, weather, and family dictated our RV travels.

After eight years of traveling in our RV full-time, we moved into a regular house in northwest Phoenix, Arizona, and now travel part-time.

Black Hills South DakotaThat’s me.  I was exposed to camping and RVing at a young age.  Wanting to travel regularly, I became a Flight Attendant, which led to marrying a Pilot.  Go figure!

Although the aviation lifestyle was great, it was not conducive to starting a family.  I quit aviation, became a Realtor, worked for a couple of Home Builders, and eventually started my own company in Home Building.  Oh, add in a couple of children just for fun!

After years of running a business and raising children, it was time for a break, time for a change, time to travel and explore … time to hit the road in an RV.

Al…..

Al grew up in a small farm town in northern Illinois and travel was something he dreamt about.  After college, he became a Naval Officer and Aviator.

This was an exciting adventure well beyond those small-town dreams. The Navy took him all over the world.  He decided to leave the military and go into Commercial Aviation where he fell in love with a Flight Attendant ten years his junior.  Years later, Al left aviation, joined Ingrid in the business, and is now mostly retired.

In 2015, we visited Corpus Christi, Texas, and toured the USS Lexington which is an aircraft carrier turned into a museum. This is the very aircraft carrier that Al flew on and off of to earn his Navy wings. Shortly after Al’s group of aviators graduated, the Lady Lex was retired.

Brittany SpanielOur Brittany Spaniel was a constant source of joy and entertainment for almost 15 years.  We continue to miss his companionship and unconditional love.  He was one of a kind and will always hold a special place in our hearts ♥

After numerous moves… From Illinois to Nevada to Colorado, Al and I decided southern Colorado was a great place to raise the children and start our own business.

In the late 1990s, I became a Licensed General Contractor and started a business in Home Building.  It didn’t take long for Al to leave aviation, obtain a General Contractor’s license, and join me full-time in the business.  The business turned into a very successful, rewarding, and award-winning venture.

Children… After our son graduated from the University of Colorado (Boulder), he moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Several years later, with a degree in Business from Colorado State University (Fort Collins), our daughter joined her brother in Phoenix.

We love having both our children located in the same city, and let’s face it, Arizona is a fun place to visit and live.

    I m Mary. Your stories are very inspiring. My husband and I live in San Antonio, TX. After 26 hard work we decided sold our business last year and purchased a RV. We had few trips on CA. and Texas near home. We love it! We are sitll new to RV life. I will love to following your fun life. We are planning to travel to South Padre Island Beginning of October. We prefer to stay overnight on the beach, but concern if have enough people will be there at the month of Oct. and if will have security guards on the beach at night? Would you share your experience or anything you know about it with us? Thank you very much.

    1. Hi Mary, we used to visit TX regularly and always enjoyed our explorations. We never stayed directly on the beach, only in campgrounds/RV Parks. Nor have we explored much south of Corpus Christi. Padre Island National Seashore offers some nice drycamping campsites. Mustang Island remains a favorite.   3. I have been searching tirelessly about the topic of having a home base for winter and rv north in the summer. We are 2 yrs from retirement, own a home and acreage in upstate NY and want to get out and rv the country but still have a place to go when we need a break, repairs,etc. We are in the planning stages, not rich and trying to get options for our plans. I purchased a new truck and looking at getting a 5th wheel at some point, while cleaning out the house. The best option I’ve found so far is buying a mobile home (prefer a small house) in a 55+ gated community which I have seen reasonable pricing, but don’t know the total costs yet. My thinking is that any place other than that would be a concern of maintenance and theft, among other concerns. We’ve considered milder winter states like SC or WV or maybe FL, but want to stay within reasonable distance to NY family. I have not found reasonable (under 100k) housing communities in SC, but several in FL (all mobile home parks). I also fear our dream may end before it begins because I’ve read about recent events due to the pandemic. We love the country and our private setting and worried that the surge of rv people on the road, BLM land closing, reservations, and campsite cramping will not be as enjoyable as we hoped. I’d love to hear your opinion and advice from your years of experience. Thank you, Steve

    1. Hi Steve, I understand your concerns and they are warranted. Due to the surge in RVing, finding available campsites has become a challenge. The freedom to roll on a whim is difficult and more expensive than ever before. Housing prices have also been surging in places like FL, TX, and AZ. Having a home base and RVing part-time is ideal in my opinion. We pay for an annual RV lot in a 55+ park in Phoenix so we can come and go on our terms and know we’ll always have a place to park. (We have family here) We’ve considered a Park Model, but also looking at houses. You are wise to start planning now, and I wish you luck in your search.

  6. Looking forward to meeting you. My wife and I became full time RVers 7 years ago. We left the sticks and bricks behind in Phoenix and hit the road to adventure. Phoenix has been our place of residence since the mid 60’s. Two of our three daughters and 6 grandchildren were raised in Phoenix. We have spent 5 winters at the Pioneer RV Park. This place was nothing more than a spot in the desert when I moved to Arizona. Chip has done a wonderful job of managing and further enhanceing it’s development. We usually leave Arizona during the summer months and travel the northern states. This year we found ourselves back in Arizona. Prescott will be our nesting place to avoid the heat. When winter arrives we will no doubt be back in Pioneer. We have made lots of long term friends at Pioneer some of which will be joining us in Prescott this summer.

  9. Hello there Ingrid: Les Barr here from Reading, PA. I’ve been reading over your Blog about RVing, and have always thought about people that do this. I am thinking that RVing is not all that people think it is. Don’t think it would be for us. It’s nice that you can travel to all kinds of different places and see stuff that others might not. What comes into my mind is the things that are not mentioned. Expense is just one thing. Maintenance is another. Repairs on the RV can get ugly, I would think. What about bad weather when you have to stay inside the RV? You’ve also got to have the money to pay for all this. It probably is not cheap. Just a few of my thoughts, but I hope you have a enjoyable time.

    1. You are spot on with your observations. I think too many people get caught up with the beautiful online images of the RV lifestyle and fail to take into account the everyday realities.     I’m close to pulling the trigger on the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70S. Two questions – Do you shoot in RAW? Your pictures are incredible and I would love to have your skills. What software do you use for editing? Finally, (I know I said two) how do you put the live, laugh, RV watermark on your pictures? If I order the camera, I’ll order it from your website.     1. Hey there! I do NOT shoot RAW with either of my cameras. Since I rarely print, I see little reason to use up all the extra data required. JPEG works fine and I still have lots of ability to process with Lightroom 6 (downloaded disc – thus able to process without internet). The watermark is done with Lightroom. I also have Adobe Elements which is a step below the professionals Photoshop. Anne McKinnell is a full-timer and excellent photographer. I’ve downloaded her free ebooks and purchased her Lightroom and Elements courses, which she simplified for me. I found the software initially overwhelming, but really enjoy now.
      Thus far, I’m super happy with the ZS70 but I haven’t had a chance to really test out all the features. Keep me posted and feel free to email me anytime. Happy trails 🙂

I was a big travel girl most of my life and once I married (later in life to someone 21 years my senior), we began renovating homes and moving a lot, with us doing the bulk of the work.     1. I love this little blogosphere world. I’ve met some of the most interesting people. We’ll be heading to TX for the month of January, but will be back in Phx for most of February and March. Apparently it hailed in Phoenix last night? And Sedona is always colder. I love it there and will have to dress warm. I know it’s not too warm in Phoenix now, although last week you had unseasonably warm days I hear. It’s the desert! But typically, Jan/Feb would I need a heavy duty winter coat?

        1. January can be iffy but by February I rarely need anything but a sweatshirt. This morning it was in the 30’s F and now it’s only 50 F… brrr! I’ve never needed a Chicago kind of heavy coat, wearing more of a normal coat – if that makes sense 😆

  27. Hi Ingrid, Nice to find your blog. We are planning on purchasing our 5th wheel early in 2016 and traveling off and on in CO while we get the bugs worked out and then going on 1-3 month excursions as the mood strikes us. It took awhile to narrow down the field to our short list of rvs. Btw, Al looks familiar. Were you builders in the Springs? I was active as a Realtor here from 2003-2011. Left RMP that year and just doing referrals for friends and past clients anymore. We were just on a road trip with a stop in Tucson last month. Love the desert there!     1. Thanks for stopping by and we too love the desert… ‘in the winter’. We started off with the 1-4 month excursions for a couple of years before going full-time. We lived in the Springs in the late 90’s and finally moved to Pueblo West in the early 2000’s after commuting for several years. We never built in El Paso County sticking to Pueblo County exclusively. Small world sometimes 🙂

      1. Hi. It’s been a busy past month with holidays and a new grandson, so sorry I didn’t respond sooner. Yes, winter in the desert is so beautiful. I also love the beach and have to get away from being landlocked at least once a year. We can’t imagine anything better than Colorado in the summer though. I only sold real estate in El Paso and Teller counties. Have lived in the Springs for 28 years, but like you we are eager for the next phase and spending time in places we haven’t had much time for before now. Taking our own bed along will be so much nicer than airports and hotels. The idea of changing our view whenever we want is incredibly appealing. Have a great 2016.

It appears I have a bit in common with you and your husband besides a Spaniel (English Springer)…I flew KC-130s for the Marine Corps in late 80s/early 90s, so have some naval aviator in my blood. I left the Marine Corps and aviation behind but saw a fair amount of the world that way. I look forward to reading your blog and viewing your photos!

  36. It sounds like you and Al live an amazing life. My lady and I are in our mid-late 20s and are avid travelers, often discussing how we intend to go about it in our later/retirement years. Our thoughts always tend to lean towards your RV style method (at least during the North American summer) and your blog is further inspiration for such an incredible endeavour! Their plans changed a wee bit due to the unexpected birth of their first grandchild! After returning home for a few months, they are heading back out on the road at the end of January!

  52. I have to say, you sure live the good life. I tried it for two years in a – hum, sort of rv – I called it my minivan-camper. It was the best time of my life. I’m back living the stationary or should I say ordinary life. But as wonderful as it was, nothing can pull me away from my new adventure – Kai. He was definitely worth parking my mini-camper. I look forward to the time he’s old enough to enjoy the freedom of the road with Gamma, well at least his summers. I look forward to your stories and photos of your journey of freedom.

    1. Tell him I was attached to VT2.
      We were down in Rockport last winter for a month in our motorhome. That is close to Corpus Christi and the weather mid Dec-Jan was iffy at best. Lot’s of rain, wind, and cold days.

        1. Not this winter, but perhaps Arizona in early spring, and certainly Colorado all summer. We are only 50 miles from Rocky Mountain national park so we do a lot of Estes Park in the summer. This summer we did a week in Buena Vista and that was magnificent.
          We are flying to Mexico for a week this winter. That is always a treat.

We lived in Denver for many years (where I built houses and owned a construction business between 2003-2008) and have been living in Indianapolis for the last few.   88. Hi Ingrid. Loving your blog, as well as your other followers. I took time to read “about us” and found much in common with you. I grew up in the western burbs of Chicago. Moved around the country a bit. Raised two children. Also, a scrapbooker for about 25 yrs., before it had a name. Living in Florida and Wisconsin now, in our vacationlands. Hubby, Dave, is still working, but getting closer to retiring. I follow many RVer’s blogs, learning about the lifestyle. We too, hope to hit the road and explore this beautiful country someday. We are going to keep one of the houses and RV for long periods of time throughout the year. It seems that’s what you do, since you wrote in this post you are heading home and pictures of “Welcome to CO” were in your post. Thanks for sharing your road trips with all of us 🙂

  97. Thanks for the follow! I’m amazed how much we are alike, oh my! I was raised in Illinois and our family dog was a Brittany. Before my back issues my husband and I were big time backpackers, now we are into geocaching instead. Husband is a history buff and daughter a world history teacher. I’ve never been much for cooking so we have always just gone out to eat, everyday. Now I don’t work and have been forced to learn…. it’s ok! We LOVE to camp, but had to get rid of our (KEYSTONE LAREDO!!!) 5th wheel a few years ago. We hope to buy one another one in the next few years.   116. I can’t believe I haven’t commented on your blog before now. I really enjoy it and need to ask Al, where did you grow up in Illinois? I was raised in a very small town in Illinois (about 800 residents) called South Wilmington, about 25 miles south of Joliet. We have been full-timing for about a year and are busy playing catch-up after spending many years in corporate America (managed mortgage companies for homebuilders for many a year), not taking vacations, yada, yada, yada. I’m sure you get the picture. We are amazed at the beauty here in this country. And Ingrid, I love to cook so we seem to have something in common. I look forward to following your adventures.

    1. Small world sometimes. Al grew up in Sandwich. As newlyweds we lived in Hindsdale. Completed our last custom build and closing down the company and figuring out the full-time thing. Thank goodness you left the mortgage business. What a mess. I’ll refrain from ranting. We’ll be in AZ this winter and want to check out Borrego Springs, CA, as well. Perhaps we’ll run into each other. Because of your blog, we checked out Canyon and Saguaro Lakes. Enjoying your posts and photos….our bucket list continues to grow!

  117. Just left Denver, CO. after 22 years….commuted weekly between Denver and Austin for the past 2 years..sold EVERYTHING after our kids got off on their own to do what you are enjoying on weekends FULL TIME…only into week #4 of 52 week chapter 🙂 ..our story is at:
