A Mixed Bag

We arrived at our summer destination a little over two weeks ago. Those two weeks have been filled with a mixed bag of emotions, poor energy, and stress. In addition, we celebrated an anniversary.

Wedding Anniversary

Al and I met toward the tail end of 1980 … nearly 40 years ago. That’s a lot of time to spend with one person. We’ve certainly had our fair share of ups and downs but no regrets. During the month of June, we celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary.

Our special day was spent visiting the city of Duluth, Minnesota. We had some errands to run while we were in the ‘big city’. After our errands and lunch, we strolled a Lake Superior beach and talked … reminiscing and wondering where has the time gone. Northeast Minnesota – Minnesota’s Arrowhead, will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Al and I used to spend our summer vacations in northeast Minnesota camping and canoeing. At the time, we worked in the airline industry; he a Pilot and me a Flight Attendant. We could’ve flown anywhere in the world for either free or mere pennies, but we chose to escape civilization and immerse ourselves in Minnesota’s Northwoods. Ah, the memories!

In light of those memories, our anniversary gift to each other was a couple of Minnesota coffee mugs. We rarely set foot into a Starbucks, but when our daughter introduced us to the “been there series” of mugs, well let’s just say it was time for a Starbucks visit. These mugs make us smile every morning while enjoying our coffee.

By the way, Al spent seven years in the Navy, twenty-two years as a Commercial Airline Pilot, and twelve years as a Residential General Contractor and NEVER drank coffee. But after just two short years of living full-time in an RV with me, I was finally able to corrupt him, and for the past five years, he has been an official coffee drinker. I started drinking coffee when I was sixteen during a summer spent in Germany and it took me 35 years to bring Al to the dark side. And yes, he drinks coffee black just as I do!

Other news – RV repairs and Stress

So although we enjoyed our actual anniversary, those first two weeks in Wisconsin were very stressful and sleep-deprived. During our long drive to northern Wisconsin, we encountered some problematic issues with our RV.

Anytime the belly of the beast leaks, that’s an issue for immediate attention. Fortunately, it was not of the stinky nature, but a serious problem nonetheless.

Slicing open the belly of the RV, diagnosing the problem, AND then figuring out the fix was a stressful situation … a situation that caused many sleepless nights.

First, we wondered if this was a project we could tackle, and second if we couldn’t, would we be able to find a place to get it fixed? Oh, and we haven’t even addressed the money issue yet.

Spoiler alert – the RV is almost put back together. Al and I fixed her up and are in the testing phase to make sure there won’t be any future leaks. We’ll give her another week or so before we close up the RV belly with new material that is on order.

So while we’re almost done with this major RV project (relief), how about doing some more projects – fun projects? Insert serious eye-rolling/head shaking from husband Al. Ah, and to think he thought he’d have nothing to do all summer but fish 😁. After thirty-seven years of marriage, did he really think he could just idle away his summer? He should know better! Besides I can be rather persuasive … lots of fresh baked goods, steaming hot coffee, and logical reasoning are in his future, amongst other rewards. Stay tuned for RV Fixer Upper!

  1. Hi, new reader to your blog and future part time RVer’s! I love your photographs! I have looked at your travels and I am a bit surprised that you have not done that much moving around the USA? Maybe I am missing these posts, but don’t you want to see the west (Washington) and east coast? I realize now is not a good time, but you have been at this for a few years yes?

    1. We all have our interests, finances, and obligations that come into play when scheduling travel and living the RV lifestyle. I had a travel rich life prior to this blog. While working in the airline industry, we spent a great deal of time exploring east of the Rockies (inland and all up and down the east coast) and if it weren’t for family here in Wisconsin, we would not travel east of the Rockies…. been there, done that, bought the T-shirt. We’ve traveled the west extensively, but some of those travels occurred prior to the blog. We’re all on our own personal journey with varying interests.

I guess it’s like anything in life, when we push ourselves out of our comfort zone and succeed, there’s a moment of euphoria. Thanks for sharing your story.

    1. Thank you Katie. And yes, this weather has been a ‘real treat’ everywhere we go (sarcasm). Last week it was unusually hot and humid here in northern WI with temps hitting 90 and this morning it was 52 degrees and we gave in and turned on the furnace. It should warm up today so hopefully we can get in a boat ride in comfort without being bundled up. The RV is finally back to being fit and ready for the road.

    1. Thanks Laurel. We’re doing our best to enjoy our surroundings. It’s very strange times right now and we’ve decided not to do any exploring this summer. Another year that the UP has eluded our RV travels. We’ll target 2021 🤞. Hope you two are making the best of your stay in FL. I know that wasn’t the plan.

    1. Thank you Marsha! Yes, we’ve been living in our RV full-time since 2013. We did it on a whim and were only going to live in the RV a year or two until we found someplace to settle down. Guess our search continues 😆 but we are much closer and are slowing our travels. I would love to visit Sequoia NP. So many places, so little time.

            1. We’ve visited Sedona many times. Since our son moved to Phoenix is 2009, we’ve had the opportunity to explore most of AZ and now we have a ‘home base’ (RV lot) near Anthem (north end of Phoenix). We’ll return to AZ in October.

  8. Oh my, sorry to hear the RV troubles, but very glad you made it to your destination safely! We were to leave Indiana from factory warranty repairs this past weekend…..but still waiting on some parts and such, so we’re likely here another couple weeks at least, in the middle of nowhere. Can’t wait to get our wheels rolling towards South Dakota where it’s definitely cooler!

    2. Last week was uncomfortably warm and humid here in northern WI. So, I can only imagine how bad it was in IN. We’re just waiting on some parts to finalize the repairs and we’ll be put back together soon. I’m so glad we were able to do the work ourselves. Now as to the remodel … that has sadly been put on hold 🤔 We’re concerned the humidity is too high for painting and new flooring. We don’t want things to peel or buckle once we return to the desert. Hope you’re on your way to SD soon!

    1. Hi Erica, thanks for the anniversary wishes. I’m in an area of Wisconsin that holds fond childhood memories for me as well as memories made with Al. So, it’s always fun returning and reminiscing. Yesterday, the neighbor lent us his canoe while he’s away and we can’t wait to get out for a paddle once the winds settle down. It has been over 30 years since we’ve canoed. Do I dare have a video camera turned on 😆

  11. Happy belated anniversary Ingrid! What a beautiful destination albeit the sleepless nights with the RV leak issues. Recently, a filter casing burst and began flooding the RV. Fortunately I was outside flushing the tanks and completing general cleaning. The swooshing sounds and the four fountains of water rushing out of the belly completely stunned me. It’s an unnecessary filter that only creates a pressure crawl as I have other alternatives to filtering. I say all this to share, “I understand”. What a beautiful life you both share! Sip sip hooray ☕️💚🙏🏻

    1. Oh no, that filter water leak does not sound fun. Fortunately, our leak didn’t damage anything other than a little insulation, but any water leak is never fun. We are fortunate to be able to spend our summers on private property with a beautiful view to boot. It has been a little warmer than usual so the fishing hasn’t been good, but we have a couple more months for things to improve. Hope you’re enjoying your summer!

      1. I’m glad the damage wasn’t too bad! Relatively speaking it’s too hot, even in MO, for me. Fishing is going good on Lake Taneycomo. But temps of 100 and 90% humidity are keeping me indoors~boo! The summer rush will conclude in about a month. Labor Day will be our last “big” weekend. Keep having fun and be safe!   12. Never fun to have to do repairs. Hopefully the situation is now solved and you can move on to other ‘projects’. I think we have chatted previously that we too have been together about the same amount of time. However both of us coffee drinkers from day one.
    We have collected Starbucks mugs from around the world. No small feat since we are dedicated carry on luggage travelers. Or shall I say we were. I think that may forever be a change in the airline industry.

    1. I recently discovered the “been there” Starbucks coffee mugs and think they make for a great souvenir. Yeah, I’m not sure what travel will look like for the next couple of years. Seems like more folks are opting for camper vans or RVs since airline travel maybe even more challenging than ever before and folks are looking for ways to recreate in their own state/province.     1. Well … you know first hand how these RV’s need attention from time to time. Fortunately for Al, it’s too humid and hot for some of the RV projects I wanted to do. Guess they’ll have to wait until we get back to Phoenix. I went RV shopping a few times and then took Al, and we both decided, we’re still happy with our rig and haven’t found anything we’d rather have. So it’s time to update 😏

    1. Just a few more fixes on the RV and I think we’re done for the summer. We were going to do some remodeling, but it’s just to darn humid here. I’m afraid of putting in a ton of labor only for things to have to be redone back in Phoenix. So, I think we’ll just wait until we return to AZ. That said, it would be easier to do the projects here on private property so we may change our mind if the weather improves. We’re taking it one day at a time. Besides, I have a couple of tables I’d like Al to build for me and that’ll be more fun for him than replacing the flooring in the RV. We actually don’t mind being isolated this summer and chilling with the sister and brother-in-law.

  18. Happy Anniversary! Hope your repair job is a ‘one and done and never have to do it again’!
    We are 6 months into our 51st year of marriage and just celebrated our 29th year of owning our Alberta home. The list of renos and repairs never ends – but that is fine. Fixing and building is just part of our genetic make-up, I think!

    1. Congrats on the 51 years. That’s awesome! Yeah, like anything in life that ages, there’s maintenance… (my body included lol) Our RV is 9 years old and needs a facelift. We’ve spent the past 6 months shopping for a different RV, but in the end, we didn’t find anything we liked enough to plunk down money on, thus decided to put some money into this one and freshen/fix it up. We were hoping to crank out some projects here, but with the high humidity, the long list will now be short and we’ll focus on the long list of projects back in Phoenix where the air is dry. I’m having fun gathering flooring and paint samples and scouring Pinterest for ideas.

    1. Congratulations – 49 years! That’s quite the accomplishment. Yeah, RV leaks of any kind are scary. After working on the RV ourselves, we feel more confident in our abilities and have a better understanding on her workings. Before closing up the belly, we’ll drive around a little bit just to double-check that our work will hold. The past few weeks have been exhausting and we’re ready for a little R & R. We may even nix the remodel I was hoping to do 🤔.

  25. Happy Anniversary! Being married to your best friend is the most wonderful thing in life. We’ll celebrate 50 years this summer.

    Interesting how many people have had “leaks” spring up on their drives this summer. We arrived at the lake with an empty fresh water tank and a very wet basement compartment. Our wine box all but disintegrated in the deluge but not a bottle was lost! All fixed now, phew!

    Hopefully your fix will work and you’ll have the whole rest of the summer to relax and fish!

    1. I know – quite a few of us have sprung various leaks. 2020 has not been a good year in general! Glad to hear you didn’t lose any wine 😁 Our problem turned out to be a faulty grey tank valve. While we had the belly opened, we went ahead and replaced both grey and black valves, and hopefully, we’ll be good to go for another ten years 🤞.

  27. Happy Anniversary from Dick and Steph! Steph and I have done several canoe trips, and I spent 7 Summers on lakes in Ontario above Sudbury, and loved it!

    We are enjoying life at Fun Valley, near South Fork, Colorado, and looking forward to a 10 day visit with our grandson John from Virginia. He won’t believe how beautiful it is here, and will have lots of playmates!

    Sorry you are going through the tank leaking. We just went through the same thing. As much as we love Arizona we were glad to leave when it got 113 degrees and the tank was fixed. In spite of the repairs we are really enjoying being mobile.

    1. Eek … these RV’s are not intended for extreme temps like 113 degrees. I feel your pain! Quite a few years ago, we had our tank valves replaced by a dealer and Al was never truly happy with the end result, but being RV newbies at the time, we didn’t understand the fail or the fix. But we do now and are really glad we did the work ourselves. We have a much better understanding of our mechanicals. Fortunately, being camped on private land allowed us to work on the RV. There’s no way we could’ve worked on this type of project in the RV Park in Phoenix.

I never thought Al would drink coffee, but when our daughter introduced him to “designer” coffee (macchiato, mocha, etc.) he developed a taste for it, and over time, he gave up the creamers and joined me drinking it black 😮. What a surprise! And now he looks forward to starting his morning with a cup of coffee.

    1. Thank you Pit. I think Germans are born with coffee in their veins 🤣 When I spent my summer in Germany with my aunt and cousins, my cousins couldn’t believe at 16 that I didn’t drink coffee. So one afternoon, we sat around the table with kuchen while I test tasted coffee with various ingredients – sugar, cream. In the end, I preferred it black and have been drinking black coffee ever since. When I returned home from my summer in Germany, my parents were shocked.

  38. Happy Anniversary! A 40-yr relationship that can withstand the test of time is one to cherish, even with all the ups and down! Your combined know-how and determination will get that RV fixed with plenty of time for more projects. At least you could work on it in cooler temps than in Phoenix! I’m with you on the coffee, luckily Hans and I refuse to exist without it and take ours with us when traveling, even for an overnight stay. Have a wonderful week!

    1. Thank you Terri! I think we were lucky that our leak didn’t happen until we got to Iowa and were one day from our final destination. Once we realized something was leaking, we became stressed and concerned and quit using anything water-related in the RV. Fortunately, we stayed at a great campground with the restroom across from us. We were 95% sure it was the grey tank and not the black but were freaking out nonetheless. It turned out to be somewhat of an easy fix (grey tank valve) and one the RV Park in AZ probably wouldn’t have wanted us to tackle onsite. Thus, the timing worked in our favor. With that behind us, it’s time for a little relaxing and fun!

    1. Thank you Russ and I’ll pass your thanks onto Al. Fortunately, the RV fix turned out to be somewhat easy – replacing a grey tank valve. More than anything, it was uncomfortable for a 6’3″ guy working on the ground under the RV. Since I could sit under there, I was able to provide an extra set of hands making the job more manageable considering we decided to replace both grey and black valves. Now we’re just waiting for some new underbelly to arrive and then we’ll close her up. We feel much more confident knowing we did the job right. We’ve had one too many negative experiences with dealers.

  43. Wow, we had a fresh water issue on our recent trek too. The valve that switches from fresh water to tank fill went bad and we ended up with a lot of water in our wet bay. So yeah, we understand the stress that goes along with an issue like that – especially when you’re on the road and repairs are more difficult. Not fun. Fingers crossed it’s all resolved now.

    On a sunnier note, Happy Anniversary! 37 years is an accomplishment. 37 years with several spent in a tiny tin can together deserves a major award!

    1. Thank you Laura! Yeah, that first year in the RV was pretty rough even with our long-established relationship. I’m grateful Al and I survived (emotionally AND physically 😆) and just completed our 7th year in the RV … entering year 8 of full-time RV living!

      Sounds like you had a pretty bad leak. Fortunately, we just encountered some damaged insulation with a faulty grey tank valve. We feel so much better having done the work ourselves and now have a much better understanding of our mechanicals. But it sure was stressful for a while there.

She purchased one for a friend who collects them. I fell in love with the MN design and it seemed like a great anniversary gift with a meaning.

  48. Living in an RV there always seems to be issues that require immediate attention. For us this spring it was propane that would t switch over when empty and a hot water tank that wouldn’t light when the furnace was in. Now it’s cracked linoleum that we have to deal with after a particularly harsh winter in Alberta. Now there’s the question of do we go to the US in winter as usual or stay in Canada and try to find an RV site. Stress to the max!

    1. I know there are many Canadian RVers questioning their winter plans. It’s a strange world right now and very difficult to make any plans at all. Sorry to hear about your RV issues. There’s always something, isn’t there? I’d like to remodel our RV and was a day away from picking up new vinyl plank flooring, but fear set in. I have a fear of messing up the slide by removing carpet and replacing with vinyl. We’ve never had a problem with our slides and I sure don’t want to be the cause of one. Ah, I’ll keep pondering while I’m out boating!
